![]() Set in 1995, the game follows our protagonist, a sharp-tongued, chain-smoking, hog-riding counterculture college girl in her early 20s. Q: I haven't played Kathy Rain is this game any good?Ī: Yes, Kathy Rain is one of the more widely known modern adventure games and is absolutely worth playing if a twin-peaksy style point-and-click mystery adventure sounds like it might be up your alley. The game has nice art and wonderfully voice acted though, so overall it's been a great experience and can't wait to finish. I think I've just gotten a bit spoiled with the beautiful animation you seen with some of the newer pixel art games. Obviously not a huge deal, it's pretty fine the way it is and I found myself getting used to it pretty quickly. I would have liked to see the Directors Cut add a few more frames to Kathy's movement. If I were to have one small complaint it's about the animation. I've played many classic point-and-click games but never have I seen such a great and well thought out implementation of controller support. This system works surprisingly well and is actually really nice to use. While walking around you use the right analog to view items directly around her and select which one to interact with. The cursor is actually completely gone and replaced with traditional direct character control over Kathy. When I initially read this I envisioned just using the left analog to control a mouse cursor but it is so much more. One thing I haven't seen mentioned much in other reviews so far is the addition of controller support. On top of that, there's no pixel hunting with the welcomed addition holding down the spacebar view all the items you can interact with. The puzzles make you think but provides the information pretty readily for you to do so. It's not the obscure combination of two items or triggering complicated series of events. The puzzles so far have been terrific and not falling victim to the regular point-and-click pitfalls. I haven't finished yet, but I am loving it so far. I'm glad I did too cause this is a fantastic version. It's been sitting there in my library but when I heard this was coming out so I decided to wait. I had been meaning to play this game for a couple years now.
